Getting started

You’ve just completed the Installation of October. So what is your next step?

You need to login into the administration area, or the back end, of your website if you want to access the management features of October (edit content, add accounts, install new functionality, etc.).

The default login page is: /backend (e.g. https://example.com/backend).

After you logged in, the area at the very top of the screen is called the Toolbar. It contains the main menu for October, starting with the Dashboard. October is actually far more than just a Content Management System and the CMS is only part of the management features that October offers.

Let’s take a quick tour through your October site and see how the different functions work.

Dashboard

The first page you see after logging in is called the Dashboard. It is a collection of information and links to the administration features of October in one or more widgets that the user can enable, disable, and move around. .

Depending on your permissions, your actual website may be configured differently and will most likely contain additional links that have been added by plugins. Plugins add new functionality to October. This can be anything. Please see the documentation for these plugins on https://octobercms.com/plugins.

CMS

A Content Management System (CMS) allows logged in users to manage a website (edit content, add accounts, install new functionality, etc.).

In October a "Theme" represents the entire front-end structure of a website and consist of a collection of files that combine content and design. Not to be confused with a "Skin" that would represent the look-and-feel only and that you may recognize from other systems such as WordPress. This is because in terms of conversion, design and content are very closely related and one cannot be freely changed without affecting the other.

Most amateur webmasters do not put much effort into optimizing their website for conversion but almost every high-end corporate or e-commerce site does. These websites will never be drastically changing their design but rather do some split-testing and tweak them. Their design goes far beyond "look at this new theme I installed over the weekend".

You will see a submenu on the left of the CMS section. Depending on your permissions, this submenu contains the following links:

Top

Pages

Note: If this section is available depends on your permissions.

Every page on your website has it's own unique URL (e.g. /contact).

Top

Partials

Note: If this section is available depends on your permissions.

Sometimes certain elements on a website are re-used on multiple pages or in multiple layouts. Partials allow you to do that. Partials can also be used to overwrite the views used by components. See the documentation of the plugin on https://octobercms.com/plugins

The content of a partial is injected in a page or layout using the following placeholder: {% partial 'NameOfPartial.htm' %}

Top

Layouts

Note: If this section is available depends on your permissions.

Every page on your website uses a layout. Layouts contain elements that remain the same on different pages so multiple pages may share the same layout.

The contents of a page are injected in the layout using the following placeholder: {% page %}

Content

Note: If this section is available depends on your permissions.

Sometimes certain content on a website is re-used on multiple pages or in multiple layouts. Content blocks allow you to do that.

The content of a content block is injected in a page or layout using the following placeholder: {% content 'NameOfContent.htm' %}

You can use .htm (for html), .txt (for text) or .md (for markdown).

Assets

Note: If this section is available depends on your permissions.

This section contains any images, stylesheets or scripts used by your theme.

Top

Components

Note: If this section is available depends on your permissions.

This section contains fragments of configurable functionality offered by plugins.

Plugins can overrule any aspect of October or any other plugin. For example, partials can be used to overwrite how plugin components look. See https://octobercms.com/docs/plugin/extending#extending-component for more information.

Media

Note: If this section is available depends on your permissions.

You can upload and manage the files you use in the Media manager.

Settings

You can configure the various parts of October using Settings. There are settings for the CMS, System, Mail, Logs and most likely additional settings that have been added by plugins.

Updates & Plugins

Note: If this section is available depends on your permissions.

Plugins add new functionality to October. This can be anything (e.g. invoicing, customer relations, learning management, etc.). Plugins can also overrule any aspect of October or any other plugin. Some plugins allow you to configure all sort of things without writing a single line of code but to truly appreciate the full capabilities of October you should extend the existing functionality offered by October and other plugins with your own modifications. The most flexible way to do this is to write your own plugin. Please see https://octobercms.com/docs/plugin/extending for more information.

Plugins for October can be installed in 4 ways:

  1. By downloading a plugin from your installation of October Settings -> System -> Updates & Plugins (download and update free plugins only).
  2. By creating an account on https://octobercms.com and adding plugins to a project. You can then attach the Project ID to your installation of October to download and update a collection of both free, paid and private plugins.
  3. By creating a plugin yourself. You can use the Builder plugin for this.
  4. By uploading a plugin to the /plugins folder of your installation of October and logging out and back in to install the plugin.

Note: Creating an account on https://october.com does not only allow you to purchase quality plugins and themes but also to host your own private plugins and request community support in the forum or priority commercial support from October.

Administrators

Note: If this section is available depends on your permissions.

October utilizes an advanced permission system. Plugins can also register permissions that control access to the features in the back-end.

Go to Settings -> System -> Administrators.

Top

Super users

The simplest but most powerfull permission is that of Super user. It grants users unlimited access to all areas of the system. Super users can also add and manage other users. Super users are only manageable by themselves or other S uper users; they are not visible to nor editable by regular administrators.

Groups

If you have a lot of users managing individual permissions is a lot of work. By grouping users you can change permissions for multiple users at once.

Groups are an organizational tool for grouping administrators, they can be thought of as "user categories". They have nothing to do with permissions and are strictly for organizational purposes.

Roles

If you have a lot of users managing individual permissions is a lot of work. By grouping users you can change permissions for multiple users at once.

Roles are groupings of permissions with a name and description used to identify the role. An Administrator can only have one role assigned to them at once. A Role could be assigned to multiple administrators. October ships with two system roles by default, developer and publisher. Any number of custom roles with their own combinations of permissions can be created and applied to users.

Available options are:

  • allow
  • deny

Account

You can change permissions for an individual user.

Available options are:

  • inherit
  • allow
  • deny

Site preview

On the right side of the toolbar you will find a link that allows you to Preview the website.

Account

You can change your password and other settings related to your user account by clicking on the link in the far right corner of the Toolbar.
