Dashboard

The first page you see after logging in is called the Dashboard. It is a collection of information and links to the administration features of October in one or more widgets that the user can enable, disable, and move around. .

The area at the very top of the screen is called the Toolbar. It contains the main menu for October, starting with a link to the Dashboard.

In a default setup the navigation bar at the top of the page will show the following links:

  • Dashboard (system overview page)
  • CMS (Manage the pages on your website)
  • Media (manage uploaded files)
  • Settings (configure things like email, users, users permissions, updates)
  • Preview (links to your website)
  • Account (settings for the logged in user)

Depending on your permissions, your actual website may be configured differently and will most likely contain additional links that have been added by plugins. Plugins add new functionality to October. This can be anything. Please see the documentation for these plugins on https://octobercms.com/plugins.

CMS

A Content Management System (CMS) allows logged in users to manage a website (edit content, add accounts, install new functionality, etc.). October is actually far more than just a Content Management System and the CMS is only part of the management features that October offers.

Site preview

On the right side of the toolbar you will find a link that allows you to preview the website.

The appearance of the webpage you are looking at is defined by a Theme (the Demo theme for October). Themes can contain different page layouts (e.g. a homepage will often use a different layout from other pages, like the contact page).

For now, however, let’s get on with how the rest of October works.
