Content Management System (CMS) for End-users

Introduction

A Content Management System (CMS) allows logged in users to manage a website (edit content, add accounts, install new functionality, etc.).

October is actually far more than just a Content Management System. The CMS is only part of the management features that October offers. After you have logged in you will see a link to the CMS section in the navigation bar at the top of every page.

In a default setup the navigation bar at the top of the page will show the following links:

  • Dashboard (system overview page)
  • CMS (Manage the pages on your website)
  • media (manage uploaded files)
  • Settings (configure things like email, users, users permissions, updates)

Depending on your permissions, your actual website may be configured differently and will most likely contain additional links that have been added by plugins. Plugins add new functionality to October. This can be anything. Please see the documentation for these plugins on https://octobercms.com/plugins.

CMS

If you navigate to System -> CMS you will see a submenu on the left of the page. Depending on your permissions, this submenu contains the following links:

Pages

Note: If this section is available depends on your permissions.

Every page on your website has it's own unique URL (e.g. /contact).

Partials

Note: If this section is available depends on your permissions.

Sometimes certain elements on a website are re-used on multiple pages or in multiple layouts. Partials allow you to do that. Partials can also be used to overwrite the views used by components. See the documentation of the plugin on https://octobercms.com/plugins

The content of a partial is injected in a page or layout using the following placeholder: {% partial 'NameOfPartial.htm' %}

Layouts

Note: If this section is available depends on your permissions.

Every page on your website uses a layout. Layouts contain elements that remain the same on different pages so multiple pages may share the same layout.

The contents of a page are injected in the layout using the following placeholder: {% page %}

Content

Note: If this section is available depends on your permissions.

Sometimes certain content on a website is re-used on multiple pages or in multiple layouts. Content blocks allow you to do that.

The content of a content block is injected in a page or layout using the following placeholder: {% content 'NameOfContent.htm' %}

You can use .htm (for html), .txt (for text) or .md (for markdown).

Assets

Note: If this section is available depends on your permissions.

This section contains any images, stylesheets or scripts used by your theme.

Components

Note: If this section is available depends on your permissions.

This section contains fragments of configurable functionality offered by plugins.

Plugins can overrule any aspect of October or any other plugin. For example, partials can be used to overwrite how plugin components look. See https://octobercms.com/docs/plugin/extending#extending-component for more information.
